Women’s Only BJJ

This class is reserved exclusively for our female students, providing them with an environment where they can experience the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The curriculum of our Women’s Only class focuses on overcoming a bigger, stronger opponent. Learn the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with an emphasis on technique over strength and size.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling based martial art that focuses on ground mechanics, leverage, balance, and developing a strong core. It allows a smaller individual to gain a significant advantage when pinned by a much larger individual. BJJ teaches a person to remain calm by eventually rewriting the body’s natural reactions to uncomfortable situations, developing an innate ability to handle an attack.

Additionally, BJJ teaches mindfulness, given the state of alert the body is in during drills and sparring sessions. Without knowing it, BJJ students offer each other a powerful, affirming, accepting, and biologically-mediated experience, simply through the body-to-body contact that occurs. Such contact triggers the release of neurochemicals in our brain and hormones throughout our body, making us more aware, focused, and connected.

One of the things that distinguishes BJJ from other martial arts is that from day one, the first time you step on the mat and attend an introductory class, you are grappling face-to-face with other students. While drills and techniques are critical to your development as a BJJ student, students must pit themselves against other students from the first class. This pragmatic strategy is core to BJJ’s philosophy, which attempts to apply these skills in real-world defence situations. As a BJJ student, you test these skills daily against people with varying degrees of skill, strength, and technique.

This program is available to women of all skill levels as part of our Adult program.

Muay Thai

Our Muay Thai classes are for all fitness and experience levels. Anyone, from those brand-new to the sport to intermediates, is welcome. Muay Thai is a sport that tests your endurance, speed, power, agility, and flexibility. While there is punching and kicking combos, the most significant difference between Muay Thai and other striking sports is its use of the clinch and elbows and knees. Classes focus on introducing participants to the basic movement patterns and building on that each week.

Muay Thai works the whole body and challenges individuals to move in a way that, at first, may feel foreign. However, it’s a great cardiovascular and agility workout that will also help practitioners build confidence by trying a new activity with new challenges. It is also a great mental workout. Learning new combinations takes a certain level of focus to be in the present moment.

Class Format
Classes start with dynamic stretching that mimic the movements to come, warming up the body first while learning basic movement patterns. The focus is not to burn you out, but instead to show you how to kick and throw a punch properly. That does not mean it’s not challenging. The majority of the class involves shadow boxing, learning combinations, and exercises directly related to strengthening specific muscle groups, and some partnered pad work. Therefore, we highly recommended using gloves or hand wraps. Classes finish with a 5-minute cooldown and stretch.

Benefits
Muay Thai provides the ability to learn a fun new sport in an inclusive and welcoming environment. It helps increase speed, endurance, and flexibility and pairs well with any training regime. Learn the fundamentals of Muay Thai and then build on these skills each week, perfecting the combos and increasing movements’ fluidity.

Class Schedule
Muay Thai classes meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings and are open to anyone over 18.

woman learning self defense

Self-Defense

Many people seek out martial arts as a way to defend themselves. When examining Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, some people raise concerns that the practice has become too focused on competition and sport. Some people criticize BJJ, stating that many techniques and guards are not worth knowing for someone defending themselves against an attacker. We believe this comparison creates a false dichotomy.

This argument neglects some core training principles. While BJJ has grown and developed as a highly competitive and sophisticated sport, it still offers its practitioners a deep understanding of how to defend against an attacker. The ability to execute highly technical movements on the mats often gives practitioners an innate ability to protect themselves on the streets.

While BJJ is complex, it is also structured around core fundamental principles, such as guard passing, that give students a deep understanding of a fight’s chaotic dynamic.

Our students have the option of sparring every day. Because BJJ considers sparring an essential part of training, practitioners test their skills daily, giving them a thorough understanding of their techniques’ effectiveness. Additionally, the experience of being in an actual physical conflict adds a necessary level of realism. Many people find their adrenaline kicks in the first time someone attacks them. Training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives students a sense of familiarity with these kinds of situations, allowing them to remain calm under pressure.

While BJJ doesn’t involve kicking or punching, it does focus on arguably the least natural part of the fight: grappling. Most people have some innate understanding of how to throw a punch or kick. Grappling often forces the body to move in unnatural ways, making it the least instinctual aspect of a physical conflict.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches practitioners how to handle altercations to protect themselves and gives them tools to stay calm and in control. The average person has no idea how to counter most submissions, which allow the attacked person to gain control of the situation. We believe that teaching our students Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives them not only the tools they need to defend themselves but the experience to remain calm and avoid panicking under dangerous situations.
